Club volleyball is much like other select sports. There are open tryouts for team selections after which teams will practice and play in tournaments approximately every other weekend for 4–7 months depending on the age group.
Club volleyball tournaments are arranged by age group and are held on weekends.
Carolina Explosion plans to offer teams for athletes ages 14U–18U for the 2026–2027 club season. The age definitions can be found here.
Carolina Explosion is based in the Triangle area of North Carolina with primary practice and training facilities located in Raleigh. We serve athletes throughout Raleigh, Wake Forest, Durham, and surrounding communities.
Carolina Explosion is not new. We are entering a new era with revamped leadership, coaching staff, and a stronger focus on athlete development, culture, and long term growth.
Tryout dates and registration information will be announced prior to the season. U15–U18 tryouts are typically held in late summer, while younger age groups may occur later in the fall.
Teams are formed based on skill level, positional needs, athleticism, coach evaluations, and overall fit within the team structure and development model.
Team placement decisions are made by the coaching staff based on evaluations and what is believed to be the best developmental and competitive fit for each athlete.
Carolina Explosion aims to maintain roster sizes of approximately 9–11 athletes whenever possible to maximize development opportunities and individualized coaching attention.
Depending on team level and age group, athletes can expect approximately 3–4 training opportunities per week including team practices, position-specific developmental clinics, and open gyms and supplemental training opportunities.
Yes. Athletes will have access to developmental and position-specific clinic sessions throughout the season.
No. Carolina Explosion is committed to developing the whole athlete through leadership development, recruiting education, mental health and wellness sessions, and individualized coaching support.
Tournament schedules vary by team level. Teams may compete in local, regional, multi-day travel events, national qualifiers, and possibly AAU Nationals for select teams.
Yes. Depending on team placement and competition level, some teams may participate in travel tournaments that require overnight stays.
Yes. Carolina Explosion offers recruiting education and guidance for athletes and families including communication strategies, recruiting timelines, highlight videos, and proactive recruiting support.
